Biomedical

HIV remains a critical health challenge in Kenya, affecting 1.378 million people, with women disproportionately impacted—890,747 women compared to 487,710 men (NSDCC 2023). Even more concerning, 78% of new infections occur among adolescent girls and young women. BHESP is on the frontlines, working to change this reality by providing inclusive, community-driven, and life-saving health services to key populations. Our goal aligns with Kenya’s vision of ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, and we are determined to make it happen.

Our Biomedical Interventions

We offer safe, accessible, and stigma-free healthcare designed to reduce new HIV infections and improve overall well-being.

HIV Prevention: Keeping Women Safe

Prevention is our first line of defense. We empower women and adolescent girls with accurate information, practical tools, and accessible services to reduce their risk of infection.

🔹 HIV Testing & Counseling (HTC) – Providing confidential testing and support.
🔹 Condom & Lubricant Access – Education, demonstrations, and free distribution.
🔹 PrEP & PEP – Offering preventive medication for those at high risk.
🔹 STI Screening & Treatment – Ensuring sexual health remains a priority.
🔹 Harm Reduction for Women Using Drugs – Providing safer alternatives and medical support.
🔹 Cervical Cancer Screening & HPV Vaccination – Protecting women from preventable cancer.

By ensuring these services are available at our Drop-In Centers (DICEs) and through outreach programs, we reach women where they are—in informal settlements, nightlife hotspot , and even dumpsites—eliminating barriers to access.

HIV Care & Treatment: Beyond Diagnosis

For women living with HIV, access to timely and effective treatment is non-negotiable. BHESP is committed to the UNAID 95-95-95 global targets:

95% of people living with HIV know their status.
95% of those diagnosed are on treatment.
95% achieve viral suppression, reducing new infections.

We provide Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), ensuring women receive consistent, high-quality care to live healthier, longer lives.

Mental Health: Healing the Mind & Body Together

Mental health is often overlooked in HIV care, yet it is a lifeline for women facing stigma, violence, and marginalization. BHESP integrates mental health support into our HIV and GBV programs, ensuring holistic healing.

 What We Offer:
Routine Mental Health Screenings – Identifying depression, anxiety, and trauma early.
Integrated Counseling – Offering in-person, online, and group therapy sessions.
Tailored Referrals – Connecting those with severe symptoms to specialized psychiatric care.
Follow-Ups & Rescreening – Ensuring ongoing mental wellness.

Combining mental and physical health support, we help women regain their confidence, strength, and control over their lives.

Differentiated Service Delivery Model (DSD): Care That Fits Every Woman’s Life

We know that frequent hospital visits can be a burden, so we bring care closer to the people through innovative service models:

🔹 Community ART Groups (CAGs) – Peer support systems that strengthen treatment adherence.
🔹 Fast-Track Model – Reducing waiting times for medication pickups.
🔹 Multi-Month Dispensing – Providing 3-6 months’ worth of ARVs to reduce clinic visits.
🔹 Home-Based Care – Personalized healthcare delivered where women feel safest.

By making healthcare flexible, client-centered, and efficient, we ensure women never have to choose between treatment and their daily survival.
